MICMC COMMISSION COMPOSERS

MICMC Commissions Nicole Brady and Matt Laing

For each MICMC competition, two new works are commissioned from Australian composers, one string quartet and one piano trio. All the competing ensembles are required to include a performance of the relevant new work in the preliminary rounds – this means these new works will travel the world with the ensembles after the competition.

Artistic Director Wilma Smith has commissioned Matt Laing to compose the string quartet, and Nicole Brady to compose the piano trio.

Two commissioning organisations are supporting MICMC by funding one of the $10,000 commissions. Silo Collective are funding Matt Laing’s work and Continuo Community are funding Nicole Brady’s.

Share the excitement and pleasure of commissioning a new work for MICMC 2027 by contributing to one or both of these commissions. See below to find out how.

Support Nicole Brady's Commission

Continuo Community invites donors to make a donation of any size, large or small, to fund Nicole Brady’s commission, which they have chosen as their 2026 Founders’ Fund project. Continuo is a registered charity, so all donations are tax-deductible.

Support Matt Laing's Commission

Silo Collective invites donors to contribute an equal amount of $500. Donations to their commission can be made via MICMC’s fundraising page on the Australian Cultural Fund website. To contribute:

  • Make a donation of $500.
  • Check one of the top two options under Donor details, so that Silo know who’s in their Collective.
  • Include the words Silo Collective in your supporter message.

Some of you may have read a past MICMC post about restricting entries to the Asia Pacific Region. This was posted when the war in the Middle East was making international travel expensive, uncertain and possibly dangerous.

On advice from the Word Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC), MICMC has decided to continue as a truly international competition. Rather than restricting entries, we will be capping the amount for competitor airfares.

COMMUNITY PARTNER ANNOUNCED

COMMUNITY PARTNER ANNOUNCED

We’re very happy to announce our Community Partner: Music and the Brain Foundation. After a conversation with Co-Founder, Monica Cashin, and hearing and reading about the incredible work they do, using music to prevent, treat and manage brain-related disorders, it was obvious that we have much in common, including bringing people of all ages together to learn and make music – that’s therapeutic at any level.

Music is a powerful healer and nourisher and when we get some of our MICMC competitors into the community pre-competition to work with some of Monica’s community groups, you can bet the benefits will be flowing both ways. We look forward to finding ways to collaborate as we move towards MICMC 2027 and beyond. Find out more about Music and the Brain Foundation here: https://www.musicandthebrain.org.au/
